Youth Beyond the Village: Supporting Young People Toward Independence
Our SOS Children Villages Armenia’s family focuses on smoothing the shift of our young people in moving from institutional care toward a stable and independent life. This transition is not simply about leaving a place where they lived, it is about being prepared with all the skills, confidence, and opportunities that they need to fully participate in our society and become functional adults for our country and humanity. We are fully aware that leaving the SOS Children’s Village is one of the most sensitive stages in the life of our children that were raised in alternative care. From this moment, they must face responsibilities that many others learn gradually within a family environment.
Young people suddenly need to manage housing, employment, finances, and social relationships. Without proper guidance, these responsibilities can become overwhelming. Research on youth leaving care shows that the lack of structured support during this transition often leads to lot of difficulties. A young person leaving the SOS Village does not simply need financial assistance. They need a structured support system that helps them build practical life skills and make responsible decisions. Through mentoring, counseling, and practical training, young people learn how to manage daily responsibilities.
Our mission is not simply providing a good life and alternative care, but we carefully teach and prepare them to learn how to plan their finances, organize their living conditions, and build professional networks. These experiences gradually transforms them from being dependent on alternative care into independent functional adults. Because we believe that each young adult who gains independence becomes a contributor to the community rather than someone struggling at the margins.
Many young people who grew up in SOS Children’s Villages Armenia have successfully built independent lives with continued support. Some have become teachers, social workers, engineers, or entrepreneurs. Others contribute to their communities through creative or technical professions. Their journeys demonstrate that the right support at the right time can transform a difficult beginning into a strong future. These stories also show that investment in young people creates long-term benefits for society.
Supporting young people on their path toward independence is a shared responsibility. Your ongoing donations and support make it possible to provide education, mentoring, housing and mental support for our SOS children to become young adults who are confident and exited to begin their independent lives and not afraid of facing the future. You too can join our mission by donating time, funding and wisdom. This is your invitation to become a member of our big loving #SOSfamILY
